Driving alone is boring. I was always the first to volunteer to drive my group of friends anywhere. We would pile in the car, turn the music up loud and hit the road. What I didn’t realize is how many distractions my friends created for me.
They argued over which song to play while laughing, squealing and eating. You name it, and they were doing it. It was so hard to stay focused and keep my eyes on the road.
Distracted driving is extremely dangerous and it raises the risk of having an accident. You don’t have to give up the fun of driving with friends in the car, but you do need to be smart. Here are some tips on how to minimize distractions while driving with passengers:
- Never have more passengers than your car is equipped for.
- Make sure everyone is wearing a seat belt.
- Designate one person to be in charge of the music.
- Enforce a “no food or drink” rule.
- Focus, focus, focus.
Even after enforcing these rules, your friends can still be a distraction. It is up to you to concentrate on driving. Always keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
