As an east coast resident and driver, I am well aware that inclement weather requires that you drive slower, be extra cautious and leave a lot of space between yourself and the car in front of you. While this method is more time consuming, it’s the safest way to drive when the weather is not on your side.
Let’s take a journey to Phoenix, Ariz., where summer monsoon storms are known to bring “heavy deluges with little warning, often causing localized flooding.”
Over the weekend, a surprise downpour resulted in multiple crashes involving more than 60 vehicles over a 2.5-mile stretch of Interstate 10 near Phoenix’s downtown area.
Surprise! Your car is now one of many in a 60-car pile up because you made the conscious decision not to travel at a slow speed and safe distance!
CBS News reports that local officials are blaming the pile up on drivers traveling too fast and not leaving enough distance between vehicles.
Seven people with serious injuries, none life-threatening, were taken to Phoenix area hospitals and 30 to 40 people who had minor injuries were treated at the scene.
To the good people of Phoenix: REALLY?
Friends, I am going to assume you know where you live. I am also going to assume you’ve lived there for quite some time. If you KNOW certain weather conditions are prone to your area then you should also KNOW how to handle them. If not, do everyone and their insurance policies a favor and stay off the road.
