Drinking and Driving

Jared’s Story

It’s a Friday night and you and your friends are at the football game. The game is almost over and you see two of your friends talking to upperclassmen. One guy hands your friend a suspicious water bottle and she takes a drink. From the clinched look on her face, you know it’s not water. The game is over and now your friends want to go to an after party with the group of guys. What do you do?

Your friends have had a few sips of alcohol but don’t appear to be intoxicated. Still, you’ve seen the PSAs and have read the news stories - drunk driving is the same as buzzed driving. You don’t want to seem like a “goodie two shoes” but then again you’re not stupid. Here’s what you can say:

  • “Look, I don’t know what was in the water bottle but I wouldn’t recommend driving or getting in the car with those guys. Do you want me to take us somewhere else?”
  • “I’m not feeling well. I think I’m going to call my parents to pick me up. Do you want me to have them pick you up too?”
  • “Not for nothing, but I bet there will be police checkpoints set up around here because of the game. I don’t think you should risk getting pulled over.”
